My Favorite Songs: Ding FeiFei’s Suanleba

This is pretty much my favorite song right now.  I just love the emotion, love the scalar guitar part, love her voice, love the lyrics…

Basically, the song is about deciding to break up.  She’s sitting on the side of the road, no lights, as it is raining, thinking about the promises they made before.

But apparently they have fought so viciously, they can’t go back to the way they were before.  So she says to herself, forget you ever loved him, forget what you said before, forget you ever belonged to him, never think of/miss him again…love is like a cup of cold tea you won’t drink but won’t throw away…never mind, let’s just go our own way.

I used to dream of having our family, where I could be safe in your embrace…I don’t know how things changed, I don’t know exactly when we deviated from the dream, and the wings of our dream were broken so we couldn’t fly to paradise anymore…let the rain wash away our dreams…actually, no one needs to apologize…

…forget you ever loved him, forget what you said before, forget you ever belonged to him, never think of/miss him again…love is like a cup of cold tea you won’t drink but won’t throw away…never mind, let’s just go our own way…

Great Song, Pretty Girl, Lousy Videos

Okay, check out this video (warning: Chinese Mandarin):

Pretty good song, IMHO.

But the video was shot in a choppy style, and yet the dancing is still unconvincing to me.

Apparently that’s cuz the choreographers didn’t have much to work with.

I say that because a live performance shows she is an entirely uninspired/uninspiring dance:

Making matters worse, the backup singer(s) really screw up throughout the whole song, too.

But at least the video proves 徐怀钰 (Xu Huaiyu) has a good, strong singing voice. But she’s not a dancer…

Breaking News!!!

First apologies all around for not writing anything for a long time.

It’s not that I was so strapped for time that I couldn’t get around to writing.  I was busy, but I had time to write something.

No, it is just that I didn’t know what I wanted to do.  I’ve been spinning my wheels with blogging for nearly 8 years now, and I’ve really gotten nowhere.  Everytime I start to get an audience, I get all self-destructive and instead of appreciating what I’ve achieved, I start getting frustrated I haven’t achieved more.

So I wanted to spend some time thinking about my next step.  I do really love writing.  Blogging seems to fit my personality…at least, it is a very satisfying hobby most of the time.

Blah, blah, blah.  I could give you the setup for hours.  Let’s get down to brass tacks:

I have a new writing gig. I’ve been accepted at to write about Chinese Rock Music.  My 2nd article is here.

There is an extremely good chance I will be allowed to add another topic and also write on Electric Guitars within the next 2 weeks or so.

I really wish I’d sent off the Electric Guitar application first…that’s the one I really am most interested in.  Although, to be honest, I am far more uniquely qualified to write about Chinese rock music than electric guitars.

Hopefully I’ll get to do both.

I’ll be posting videos, doing features on artists.   I really hope there is something there about Chinese rock stars you can enjoy.  Please subscribe to the page, and please forward it to anyone you think would be interested.  Heck, forward it to people you think won’t be interested…you never know.

I’ll make another announcement if/when I get the writing gig for the Electric Guitar topic.

Guitar Obsessions: It’s a Sickness in My Soul

A few weeks ago, I bought a ’91 Hamer XT Californian (import) for $100, shipping included, and practice amp included.  I figure, sell the amp for $30, take better pictures of the guitar, and sell it for $120 or so, and I make a $50 profit.  I cannot go wrong.

Except that I *really* like the guitar.

Yeah, it’s got a huge chip/gouge out of the wood just below the volume knob.  Well, so what?

1) it doesn’t affect the sound

2) it means I don’t really need to be worried about any other minor dings.

The guitar is really dirty.  I haven’t loosened the strings to clean the fretboard yet, but I will.  The fretboard is filthy.  But except for the gouge, the paint job is really nice.  A good polish could make it shine nicely.  And it might not be impossible to fill the gouge and paint over it for a 90%+ color/albedo match.

But: man!  The guitar rocks.  It’s really loud and sweet sounding unplugged.  I haven’t plugged it in yet, to tell the truth (no time! busy!).  And the neck/action is really fast and smooth, too.

I don’t want to sell it anymore.

China is getting really good at making good quality guitars.  Both my Chinese factory-made XTs are better than any but the very best Korean-made guitars.  I’d bet this is better quality than even a Mexican strat (generally considered to be below USA Strat quality, but better than any other nation’s import).  It is just plain a damn good guitar.

With the USA Diablo on the way, and with how much I like this guitar, there’s a very good chance that the Slammer by Hamer Centaura will be sold.  It is in great condition, and the trem works perfectly, but the sound is sub-par.  No reason to hold on to it that I can tell.

I guess I’m going to end up with a bunch of awesome shredders without any ability to take advantage of it.

That’s just the way I roll.

I’m Thinking About Buying Another Hamer USA Shredder (Chapparal)

This now fulfills my voluntary obligation to try and post something about guitars every day.

Honestly, I’ve been so busy with my Masters degree study, I haven’t had time to pick up a guitar at all.  That’s going to be one of the good points about my upcoming deployment.

Tal Farlow

The guy was an amazing jazz guitarist.

He started playing at age 21, and was playing professionally a  year later.

He didn’t like performing much, though, so before too long he just went into sign painting, making the occasional studio album.

You can find all that from his wiki page, though.

No, what I find cool about him is he out-Yngwie J. Malmsteens Yngwei J. Malmsteen.  If you get the chance, listen to him do Cherokee.  Blistering scalular licks all over the place.  And there are a number of songs where he sweep-picks arpeggios.

…and I thought Yngwie,  Frank Gambale, and/or Alvin Lee pioneered all these speed techniques.

Guess not.

You can listen for free here.
