Okay, I’m Back to Posting Here

It looks like this is going to be a good year for me to start back up writing about the Chiefs.

This time I’m writing for this site only, and for my own enjoyment. That should take some of the pressure off, and let me get back to enjoying what I write again.

I’ve also got 26 Guitar Lust posts queued up…well, as yet unwritten, but I’ve got the post titles saved! I’m getting ready to sell/trade some guitars, so I need to grab some pictures to aid in the selling/trading process. And part of the process is also playing the crap out of all of them to decide which ones I must keep.

The idea behind calling the series Guitar Lust is that aeach of these guitars has a reason for someone to want them. If not, I wouldn’t currently own them, now, would I? 🙂

Now, I won’t be knocking them out in 26 days. The first problem with that would be I don’t have time to write that much. The second problem with that would be that I still have a good deal of repairing and playing to do first. The third problem would be that I would be left with nothing else to write about too soon.

But in any case, I will write about 2-3 cool guitars every week. The posts will be entitled “Guitar Lust”, as I already revealed. They will be guitar reviews, however.

After I finally finish going through all the guitars that I currently own (and a few that I remember clearly enough to still provide a valid review on), I will then turn to more of an exploration of guitars I wished I owned. As such, these future posts will be more about beautiful pictures and interesting functions/features rather than actually being able to tell you how they sound/feel.

After that, we’ll see.

All I can say is, don’t expect many reviews of Fender Stratocasters or Gibson Les Pauls, as I find those guitars boring in their ubiquitousness. In fact, be mildly surprised if I write about Fenders and Gibsons at all (although there will be a few, I promise).

I hope at some point to build a reputation of being an entertaining writer about guitars, who then will be available to do reviews of any guitar that is sent to me (whether or not I get to keep the guitar afterwards).

Heck

I guess I don’t really know what I’m doing.

Before I ever even got started, I gave up on Examiner.com

They insisted I write as a journalist (i.e., no personal pronouns), but I found myself wasting time thinking of how to frame the articles I wanted to write according to their required stylesheet more than I spent thinking of the actual articles themselves.

So maybe I’ll go back to blogging here. Except that I am spending less time on the computer at home, and there are some potential problems with posting at work.

So we’ll have to see.

I got lots of guitar stuff to write about, though…

Plans for the Future

This blog will probably switch to only writing about the Kansas City Chiefs.

I think I might not write about socio-political topics again…or at least not in the near future.

Great News: Guitar Posts Announcement

I have been accepted as the Electric Guitar Examiner on the Examiner.com collection of webpages.

I will be writing articles daily about guitars at this location.

Please subscribe to the site.  Please link to interesting posts.  Please email your favorite posts to your interested friends, and encourage other people to visit often and subscribe.

I plan to have a set schedule:

Monday: Guitar Lust

Tuesday: Guitar Hero Instrumental YouTube Video

Wednesday: Chord progression

Thursday: Manufacturer highlight

Friday: Cool guitar riff o’ the day

Saturday: Guitar Review

Sunday: Starting from Zero: Guitar Tips, Tricks, and Techniques

This schedule could evolve, and probably will.  But I’ve already got the first few months mapped out.  It will be my view, my knowledge, my taste, my blindspots and favorites.  For instance, there isn’t going to be much love and attention given to Gibson Les Pauls and Les Paul copies, and Fender Stratocaster and copies.  What’s the point?  How much variation is there to a Gibson Les Paul?  The paint color?  The neck carve? There just isn’t much room for creativity or innovation on the traditional guitars…if they innovated, then they wouldn’t be traditional, would they?  So you will see a focus on unique guitars, rare guitars, guitars that have something special about them, guitars that break molds or defy expectations.  There will also be some guitars included just because they are pretty, which is where you may see Gibson and Fender.

But we’ll have to wait and see where this all leads.

Please subscribe.  Please leave feedback.

Breaking News!!!

First apologies all around for not writing anything for a long time.

It’s not that I was so strapped for time that I couldn’t get around to writing.  I was busy, but I had time to write something.

No, it is just that I didn’t know what I wanted to do.  I’ve been spinning my wheels with blogging for nearly 8 years now, and I’ve really gotten nowhere.  Everytime I start to get an audience, I get all self-destructive and instead of appreciating what I’ve achieved, I start getting frustrated I haven’t achieved more.

So I wanted to spend some time thinking about my next step.  I do really love writing.  Blogging seems to fit my personality…at least, it is a very satisfying hobby most of the time.

Blah, blah, blah.  I could give you the setup for hours.  Let’s get down to brass tacks:

I have a new writing gig. I’ve been accepted at Examiner.com to write about Chinese Rock Music.  My 2nd article is here.

There is an extremely good chance I will be allowed to add another topic and also write on Electric Guitars within the next 2 weeks or so.

I really wish I’d sent off the Electric Guitar application first…that’s the one I really am most interested in.  Although, to be honest, I am far more uniquely qualified to write about Chinese rock music than electric guitars.

Hopefully I’ll get to do both.

I’ll be posting videos, doing features on artists.   I really hope there is something there about Chinese rock stars you can enjoy.  Please subscribe to the page, and please forward it to anyone you think would be interested.  Heck, forward it to people you think won’t be interested…you never know.

I’ll make another announcement if/when I get the writing gig for the Electric Guitar topic.

Update, Administrivia, Announcement

Hey, everyone!

I’m doing fine.  Everything is going well.

The reason I haven’t been posting is I’ve been hit with the double whammy of working extremely long hours and not having easy access to word-press.  And maybe you can add in that blogging seems pointless when there is such a partisan divide: to me, the Democrat elites clearly appear to be willing to destroy all that is good about the United States in order to implement their plan that encourages and exploits the lack of economic sense of a plurality of citizens in order to propel themselves to plausibly permanent leadership positions in what they have deluded themselves will be a benevolent authoritarian regime.  But the other side can’t see it, because everything is former President Bush’s fault.

There’s just zero common ground to even start a discussion, much less learn anything or persuade.

And the more I learn/read/analyze about the Chiefs, the less useful my conclusions are, I think.

So what now?

Well, I’m still deployed for another 5 months.  And I have my Master’s Thesis to finish up.  So don’t expect me to post too much for a while.

And even after I get back home, I don’t really want to be as addicted to the computer as I have been for the last several years.

On the other hand, however, I think I have finally figured out how to implement a blogging dream I’ve had for a few years.

As you know, I’ve participated in Amazon’s Car Lust for a few years…although I haven’t participated much since I’ve deployed.  From the first, I’ve enjoyed cars and enjoyed reading and discussing on that site.  But also from the first, I’ve wanted to do a Guitar Lust, in which I write about all the guitars that I love.

To tell the truth, my love of cars is nowhere near as quirky as Chris Hafner’s (the Car Lust initiator), and my writing is nowhere near as entertaining.  I love small cars that get good gas mileage and are nimble in the curves, but still have 4 doors.  How many times can I write that in new ways?

But: guitars!

There are guitars you want because they are rare.  There are guitars you want because they feel great when playing, and make you play better.  There are guitars you want because they have great tone.  There are guitars you want because they are beautiful.  There are guitars you want because everyone else wants them.  There are guitars you want because you hope/think they might become collector’s items someday.  There are guitars you want because of the paint job.  There are guitars you want because of a specific attribute or installed hardware.  There are guitars you want because of the wood grain.  There are guitars you want because of the uniqueness.  There are guitars you want because you want to try them out.  There are guitars you want because of the price.

I never started writing that sort of post because I wondered if I might run out of guitars within a few weeks.

Well, it has been over a year since I had that idea, and I’m still finding guitars I want.

Another problem I had was that many of the guitars I lusted after were on eBay, and those listings expire.  Well, I’ve finally decided it is worth the time to download the pictures and text, and write a post that is self-contained on my blog (enduring) with a link to the actual eBay auction so that if someone is inspired by my post they can still bid on it.  Or perhaps even better would be to include a link to the eBay search that finds that guitar, so that even if the specific guitar I’m posting about is sold, or the auction page disappears, readers can find new examples, or save the search to be notified when one pops up on eBay.

This brings up a new question/problem, however.

Do I post it on this blog?  Do I start a new blog?  If I do start a new blog, do I give up on this one?

There are only so many hours in a day.  I just don’t have time to write socio-political posts in addition to guitar posts.  But I am loathe to quite socio-political blogging altogether…I think I have good ideas, and who knows when the right socio-political blog post gets noticed by someone big, and I suddenly become a hot blogging commodity?  Yeah, right.

Still, there are times when I feel I have to let my feelings known.

On the other hand, I know how disappointing it is to me when I find that someone I like for car blogging, or humor blogging, or SF&F fiction stories, etc, turns out to be a raging liberal…I can imagine the opposite is true: that someone who would otherwise like me or my writing hates my politics.

So I want to have separate blog, just for guitars.

I may try to see if I can get a blogging page that I can reach from work, so I can work on Guitar Lust posts during the slow times of my long work hours.

Whatever I finally decide, I’ll let everyone know through this blog.

Bing Sucks

I don’t like Google running the world any more than you do.  But I have to admit that to this point, Google seems to be putting out superior products on just about everything they try.
